Join Lyndall Spooner who has 20+ years as a professional in the MR industry and Data Scientist Nick Wyatt to talk about the real data behind profanity in research responses.

PRESENTATION: C-U-NEXT-TUESDAY! CAN WE LEARN ANYTHING FROM RESPONDENTS WHO USE PROFANITY IN MARKET RESEARCH?
You might have come across recent articles in social media reporting that people who use profanity are more intelligent, honest, and funnier – and if you have a potty mouth yourself you probably think they are right! But are they? Historical beliefs tell us that the use of profanity is an indicator of someone who exhibits norm-violating behaviours such as being dishonest, criminal activity and general anti-social behaviour.
As market researchers, we have also tended to remove respondents from studies when they have used foul language believing these respondents are more likely to have given dishonest feedback.
We will present our analysis on the use of profanity in market research and provide insights around:
- Should we keep people who use profanity in our survey data?
- Is the use of profanity in research on the rise?
- If we screen out people who use profanity are we removing intelligent people who are giving us honest and informative feedback?
- And is there an advantage in finding people within our data who have used profanity to get a clearer understanding of issues with products or services that most frustrate customers?

Nick has over 10 years experience in research, including government, telecommunications and media sectors. He has a background in statistics, quantitative and qualitative research and specialises in managing complex technical projects. Nick is a graduate of The University College London with a First Class Honours in BSc in Genetics
