When conducting shop-along or in-store studies, we can each benefit from the handy tips of an expert.

Tom Rich will share his tips and tricks for in-store studies, from using a local recruiter, assigning roles to anyone “viewing,” taking lots of photos, asking participants to repeat great quotes on video outside the store to enhance reporting, and writing the report for the audience (client or retailer). By so doing, Tom will provide a comprehensive guide to conducting small- and large-scale shopper insights studies.


This webinar aims to:

  • Provide a business rationale for conducting shop-along studies
  • Examine the optimal methodological approach to shop-along studies
  • Identify the key information to collect during a shop-along study
  • How to best record shop-along data using multi-media
  • Outline the best ways of reporting shop-along findings

Speaker: Tom Rich, USA

Tom is an experienced marketing professional and qualitative researcher. Over his 30-year career, he has faced pretty much every marketing challenge there is. Since founding TMR&A in 1996, he has conducted hundreds of research projects encompassing thousands of focus groups, one-on-one interviews and online studies.

Drawing on his many years in brand management at Unilever and Nabisco, Tom takes an approach to his clients’ research needs that is simultaneously creative, strategic and pragmatic. In addition to a strong background in classical marketing and brand management, Tom is well versed in the principles of behavioral economics, and has been applying these principles to his clients' business challenges since founding his firm. He is a frequent and in-demand speaker at market research conferences and events, and regularly teaches master classes for advanced researchers.

Tom received a BA in English from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College. He received his focus group moderator training from the Burke Institute. He is a member of the Qualitative Research Consultants Association (QRCA), currently serving on that organization’s board of directors, and is also a member of the MRA.
