This Masterclass will provide participants with an accessible and comprehensive introduction to data visualisation and infographic design.

The focus for the training is to teach the craft of this discipline, helping delegates to know what to think, when to think about and how to resolve all the analytical and design decisions involved in any data-driven challenge.

Objectives of this Masterclass include:

  1. To challenge your existing thinking about creating and consuming visualisation works, helping to clarify your convictions about good visualisation design.
  2. To enlighten you with the range of analytical and design options, including chart types, features of interactivity, annotation, colour applications, and composition.
  3. To equip you with an efficient workflow giving you the confidence to make the best choices based on sound principles and practical guidelines.
  4. To inspire you to elevate your ambitions, by broadening your visual vocabulary and exposing you to latest techniques and contemporary resources for developing your data visualisation capabilities.

The workshop is structured around a proven design workflow. Across the sessions, you will build up, stage by stage, a detailed understanding of all the different aspects of decision-making that goes into any data visualisation or infographic design work.

The content is delivered through a blend of teaching, discussion, and group practice. The practical exercises vary in nature from evaluating works, conceiving ideas, identifying best-fit solutions and exploring data.

Topics include:

  • Defining data visualisation and infographic design
  • The key principles of good data visualisation design
  • The influence of contextual factors
  • Assessing the physicality and meaning of your data
  • Using visual techniques to explore data
  • The data visualisation design anatomy
  • The spectrum of different chart types and their roles
  • The features and role of interactivity in visualisation design
  • The role of effective annotation for assistance and insight
  • Colour theory and best practice applications
  • The architectural considerations of composing a visualisation work
  • Data visualisation in practice via a case study demonstration
  • Overview of some of the most essential visualisation tools

Speaker: Andy Kirk

Andy Kirk is a data visualisation specialist: A design consultant, training provider, lecturer, author, speaker, researcher, and editor of an award-winning website. Since founding Visualising Data Ltd in 2011, he has delivered over 185 public and private training workshop events in 17 countries.

Andy also holds lecturing positions, teaching data visualisation modules at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA, USA) and at Imperial College (UK).

He is the author of two books, with the most recent work published in 2016 by SAGE and titled ‘Visualising Data: A Handbook for Data Driven Design’.
