Masterclass 2019 - Visual design for single and mixed mode surveys

This Masterclass, over 3 sessions, will teach you how to achieve more effective and functional designs and layouts for your surveys.
This workshop will draw on visual design concepts from the vision sciences. Numerous examples will be provided of how visual design concepts can be applied to a questionnaire to make visual processing more efficient and effective. The examples will cover visual design issues at both the individual question level and for an entire survey.
This Masterclass will teach you:
- the importance of visual design for survey measurement
- familiarity with key visual design concepts and how to apply them to questionnaire design
- familiarity with empirical literature on visual design in survey methodology.
At the conclusion of this online Masterclass, participants will have:
- Learnt ways that survey data quality can be improved through the use of effective visual design
- Gained practical tools and examples of how to implement visual design principles with surveys
- Learnt how to use visual deign to improve mixed-mode surveys

Jolene D. Smyth is an Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Director, Bureau of Sociological Research, University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Jolene D. Smyth is an associate professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she teaches courses on survey Data Collection Methods and Questionnaire Design.
Jolene is also the faculty director of the Bureau of Sociological Research, a survey data collection unit on campus, and co-author with Don Dillman and Leah Christian of Internet, Phone, Mail, and Mixed-Mode Surveys: The Tailored Design Method (2014).
Jolene’s research focuses on survey response and measurement. Her current projects explore survey design for mixed-mode and mixed-device surveys, questionnaire design in self- and interviewer-administered surveys, interviewer/respondent interactions in telephone surveys, visual design, and recruitment for self-administered surveys.
