The 2009 National Conference will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney on Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 1 October 2009. Conference Workshops will be held on Friday 2 October 2009.
Conference 2009 is an opportunity for you all to contribute, and we have expanded the options for how you can participate in this annual industry gathering. We feel that it's more important to hear your story than to ask you to fit into a particular box.
In past years, we've announced the conference theme and issued a ‘Call for Papers', but we want 2009 to be different. The first change is...no rigid theme! We feel that it's more important to hear your story than to ask you to fit into a particular box.
Our theme for Conference 2009 is.................
100* Stories
The conference should be a place for stories, conversations, debates, discussions, stimulus, education and entertainment.

Written Papers & Presentations
At its centre, the Conference needs high quality written papers of the calibre and rigour that would fit seamlessly into appropriate academic journals. We will allocate 25 minutes of Conference time, or more if necessary, to presentations of the best written papers submitted.
All of the full written papers, and only the full written papers, will be eligible for the Tony Wheeler Best Paper Award, the George Camakaris Best Paper by a Young Researcher Awardand also the Best Presented Paper Award. These will be determined by the judging panel.
If you have a topic you'd love to talk about, an idea you'd like to share, a great lesson you've learned from a recent project, a controversial opinion, or a proposition you want to put to your peers, we'd like to hear about it.
Tell us your story. Pitch it to us - in writing, on video, whatever format is most appropriate. Tell us what you want to share with us or sound off about. Tell us the best way for you to be able to get your message across. We will allocate between 10-25 minutes for the best submissions. You don't have to submit a full, journal-ready written paper.
One of the highlights of the 2008 Conference was Pecha Kucha - 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide, a great discipline for communicating clearly. Anna Box walked away with the People's Choice Award for her fabulous Pecha Kucha session. For the 2008 Conference, the Pecha Kucha presenters were hand-picked; in 2009 we are inviting Pecha Kucha submissions from all researchers, and especially the younger or less established members of the research fraternity. If it proves popular enough, we may even have regional Pecha Kucha heats to decide who goes through to the ‘final' at the Conference in October. Think of it a bit like Idol but without Dicko and Marcia.
In 2009, for the first time, we are inviting poster submissions. You may not want to be up on stage presenting a paper. You may not even want to write a paper. However, you may have an interesting case study to showcase or an interesting point to get across. One way of doing this is to design a poster and put it forward for consideration for the Poster Gallery. We will allocate space for the best dozen posters and you will be able to tell your story via this medium whilst standing next to your poster. You will also be eligible for the Best Poster Award, and if you win, you also get an opportunity to join us on the main stage to present your story to the Conference delegates, giving your story a higher profile.
* The poster samples attached are from our 2007 Research Effectiveness Awards. They are intended as examples of posters only, and are not related to the Research Effectiveness Awards for 2009.
Another new opportunity for Conference 2009 is that we are inviting submissions from those who want to chair, host or facilitate a session. In the past, we have invited contributions for written papers or presentations and then allocated a chair for the session.
This year, we are keen to hear from anyone who wants to propose an entire package - session theme, presenters, format, length. If it sounds like a winning proposition, we'll go with your idea and/or help you develop it. We have always welcomed ideas for more interactive sessions, panel-based discussions, debates, etc and we would love to see some great ideas coming forward for audience interaction. Are you a great debater or can ‘work the audience' really well? Or do you know someone else who fits the bill?
