AMSRS National Conference 2009 - Our Speakers

Keynote Speakers | Andy Dexter Managing Partner, TRUTH UK Keynote Address: Recession is Renewal Andy will help us see recession as a time of re-thinking and reinvention. Existing businesses find creative ways through the downturn and there is typically a peak in new business start-ups in a recession. Learn more about how recessions bring a return to fundamental good practice and lead to necessary innovation to survive in the short-term and prepare to thrive in the upturn. Clients think more about how to get the most value out of shrinking budgets. Agencies get more committed and creative around client relationships and mutually beneficial business development. Recessions are often characterised by: -
a renewed focus on fundamental good business practice, reminding us of what works in bad times and good -
an emphasis on innovation, not just cost-cutting, as clients want the get the most value out of shrinking budgets andresearchers have to compete on being different in a price-competitive market -
innovation in approaches to research and innovation in the business models of research firms -
a renewed focus on new market opportunities to survive in the downturn and thrive when the upturn comes -
a renewed focus on deepening relationships with clients and deepening our understanding of our clients' customers because there's no easy business to churn through and proactivity is no longer a luxury Andy will draw from his many years of experience in research, rising to CEO of a leading UK agency, and starting a highly successful new agency. He has a personal renewal story to tell as well as the renewal story of the research industry. About Andy Dexter Andy Dexter is a Fellow of the UK Market Research Society. He is recognised by the global research community as a leading thinker and a thinking leader. Andy has picked up Best Paper and Best Presentation Awards at a number of conferences including the UK Market Research Society (MRS) and ESOMAR. Andy has a long track record of success and thought leadership in the research industry in the UK and Europe. As CEO, Andy took Incepta Marketing Intelligence (now Illuminas) to UK Top 10 status, gaining Marketing Magazine's Research Agency of the Year Award 2004. He stepped down as CEO in March 2006 to launch new business interests. Andy is the founder and CEO of Truth, which has reached £4 million turnover in only its second year of operation and won the UK Best New Agency of the Year Award. Truth has been acknowledged as an innovator in its approach to research and in its business model, which includes widening the scope of staff with a formal stake in the business. Andy took on the role of Chair of the UK MRS Conference for three successive years and helped to transform it into an exciting hub of insight, inspiring speakers, and innovative ways of engaging participants in debates, discussions, and new learning. Andy consults in a non-executive capacity to a variety of growing businesses outside the marketing insight arena. A Cambridge graduate, Andy spent many hours being lectured at by Stephen Hawking. Disappointingly Professor Hawking fails to mention this in any of his writings. | | Michael Greenacre Professor of Statistics, Department of Economics and Business, UNIVERSITAT POMPEU FABRA, BARCELONA (SP) Keynote Address: Dynamic Perceptual Mapping Perceptual maps have been used extensively for decades, by qualitative and quantitative market researchers alike, as a means of examining/illustrating the (dis)similarity between brands in terms of a set of attributes, positioning consumers relative to brands in terms of their preferences and studying how demographic and psychometric variables relate to consumer choice. Invariably, these perceptual maps have been two-dimensional and static. However, as we enter the era of electronic publishing, the possibilities for dynamic graphics are opening up. In this presentation, the effectiveness of introducing motion into perceptual maps will be demonstrated, using case studies sourced from marketing and social science research. The significant increase in interpretation that this approach allows will be clearly demonstrated, particularly in terms of: different views of the same data collected according to different protocols; between-individual versus between-group differences for aggregated data - and the incorporation of two or more demographic and/or market segment variables for each respondent in the one display. About Michael Greenacre Michael is one of the world's leading statisticians, and currently Professor of Statistics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He is widely published, including his book "Correspondence Analysis in Practice", now in its 2nd edition. Michael has a special ability to turn statistics into stories via perceptual maps. In collaboration with Dr Raul Primicerio (Norwegian College of Fishery Science, Tromsø, Norway) he has also developed a short course on multivariate analysis for environmental biologists, which they have jointly presented 11 times since 2005 in Norway, Spain, Iceland and Italy. He has participated as a statistician in various projects in the social and environmental sciences and is a member of the ARCTOS research network in arctic ecology. His main research interests are in the analysis and visualization of large data sets, and he has authored and co-edited six books and numerous journal articles on correspondence analysis and data visualization: most recently, Correspondence Analysis in Practice, 2nd Edition (Chapman & Hall /CRC, London, 2007), which has also been published in Spanish (La Práctica del Análisis de Correspondencias, Fundación BBVA, Madrid, 2008). | | Tony Keusgen National Sales Manager, Technology. Geraldine Doogue had originally planning a career as a school teacher. Within the first ten years of her career, Geraldine had carved out a reputation in print, television and radio, including two years at the London Bureau working for the Murdoch group's Australian papers. She soon moved to Sydney to host the NSW edition of the program and established herself as one of the most respected and popular personalities on national television. Geraldine then worked for a time on commercial radio with 2UE and on commercial television, co-presenting Channel 10's main news bulletin, before returning to the ABC in 1990. She played a major role in ABC TV's coverage of the Gulf War. During this period Geraldine was awarded two Penguin Awards and a United Nations Media Peace Prize. In 1992 Geraldine began presenting Life Matters, a new ABC Radio National program which set out to cover the full gamut of social issues in everyday life. In 1998, she also became host of ABC TV's Compass program, which looks at issues of spirituality, philosophy and belief every Sunday evening. After 11 years with Life Matters, she moved to Saturday mornings to host a program focusing on international politics, Australia's role on the world stage, and business, called Saturday Extra.
